The following extra curricular music opportunities are available at Northcote intermediate. Please get in touch with me (bronwynb@ni.school.nz) to express interest and encourage your tamariki to engage with our daily notices for meetings and audition timings. “Musiqhub” and “Music Education Centre” instrument lesson flyers will be been given to year 7s over the first week at school but lessons can be joined throughout the year. NB These are tutors from private companies which teach drums/piano/guitar/singing but with our NIS concert band programme – the instrument hire and lessons are free of charge (wind instruments – see details below).
JUNIOR CONCERT BAND PROGRAMME
(Year 7 beginners) – RECRUITING in Term 1 only.
We have 20 places in our Concert Band programme. Please let Mrs Babbage know ASAP if you are interested in this programme. Instrument lessons, instrument hire and concert band coaching are offered free of charge. There is a small cost for a lesson book and equipment. Compulsory practices are after school from 4pm – 5pm on Mondays along with 25 minute weekly lessons with instrument tutors during school time. Band members need to be prepared to practice at home daily for 10 – 20 minutes.
SENIOR CONCERT BAND PROGRAMME
Lessons Start in Term 1, Week 3
Please let me know if your child is not carrying on with their instrument. Band practices will begin in term 1 on Mondays from 3-4pm. If you are new to NIS, and your child already plays a wind or brass instrument and has lessons outside of school – we would love them to join us!
BANDQUEST BANDS
Time Critical – Auditions Start Term 1, Week 3
Do you have a budding Pop/Rock Star or Rapper? Organise them to prepare an audition piece! Singers need to be able to sing to a crowd, others need to be able to play an instrument already – beginners and advanced players are both considered. Bass Guitar, Guitar (acoustic or electric), Keyboard/Piano, Drums, Violin, Cello, Wind instruments are all welcome to audition.

This year our rōpu coaches are Bronwyn Babbage, Kelli Kawhi-Conrad from Northcote College, Carolyn Tepou – our new Te Reo Māori teacher and Cathy Lio (Who also coaches Pasifika Connect). Kapa Haka practices are every Monday in school time – no auditions required.
NIS DRUM GROUP
Drummers are auditioned to ensure they have a good sense of beat. The group has a mix of experienced drummers and absolute beginners. Practices are usually Wednesday morning. The drum group plays a variety of drums and a variety of styles and compose their own piece.
AWATAHA SOUL (CHOIR)
Practices are every Tuesday morning. No auditions required. Singers will have an additional opportunity to audition for solo or harmony parts.
MUSIC EXTENSION
If your child is a confident year 8 singer or creative musician they can apply to be considered for music extension groups. The class will run for however long it takes the individual or small group to compose their own song or instrumental piece (usually 3 – 7 sessions). The best songs will be recorded in Garageband and submitted for the Depot Arts Songwriting competition.
