TE AO MAORI
For 2025, every Tuesday afternoon there will be a structured Te Ao Māori slot in our school timetable. Classes will explore local history, te reo Māori language, culture and special events in the Māori calendar. Kapa Haka will practice in this timeslot also.
KAPA HAKA
Our Kapa Haka rōpu will practice weekly together on the same afternoon as our Te Ao Māori curriculum slot. We focus on pronunciation, knowledge of kupu, meanings and stories behind our pieces along with kapa haka tikanga. Additionally, keen and able tamariki who elect to be kapa haka leaders will meet weekly during a lunchtime to help choose performance material, and prepare to lead performances. There are two main cycles of our Kapa Haka year. Our first cycle is preparing for our year 6 Road shows and Matariki celebrations which occur in term 2. The second cycle is preparing for the Onepoto Cultural Festival and our end of year NIS Music and Cultural Showcase and Prizegivings. Additionally there will be powhiri or other special occasions throughout the year. Students can choose to participate Kapa Haka for the entire year (preferable – particularly for leaders) or just terms 1&2 or terms 3&4.
